Former French prime minister Gabriel Attal (January-September 2024) is promising to "upend the status quo." Attal wants to "break institutional, constitutional, and administrative taboos," one of his close advisers told Agence France-Presse on Thursday, August 21. He also wants to break another, more societal taboo: On the same day, his team announced to several media outlets, including French weekly Paris Match and rightwing daily Le Figaro, that the secretary general of Renaissance (Macron's center right party) intended to start a debate on the legalization of surrogacy, through a thematic convention [surrugacy is illegal in France, however the law allows recognition for children born through surrogacy abroad].

According to the party, this convention would take the form of a group of elected officials and experts coordinated by Camille Galliard-Minier, Renaissance MP. The group, which had already begun its work, was tasked with holding hearings and making recommendations. The convention's findings are expected to be presented at a press conference in October or November, and then submitted for a vote by party members. These proposals could then be incorporated into the party's program for the 2027 presidential election.
