Michel Barnier, appointed as France's prime minister by President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday, September 5, is the oldest person to hold the position since the creation of the Fifth Republic in 1958.
At 73, Barnier is replacing Gabriel Attal, who, coincidentally, was the youngest prime minister in modern French history.

Pierre Bérégovoy, who served under President François Mitterrand between 1992 and 1993, was the oldest prime minister in the Fifth Republic until Barnier's appointment. He was 67 when he left office.
