Drawn into the slipstream of the Paris Maison&Objet trade fair that takes place September 5 to 9 at the Parc des Expositions in Paris-Nord Villepinte, Seine-Saint-Denis, the capital's stores, galleries and museums are vibrating to the beat of design. Several must-see places are open to the public free of charge until September 14, when visitors can get a glimpse of what’s trending in the world of interiors and discover talented young designers.

Following on from the exceptional glassblower Jeremy Maxwell Wintrebert whose works were exhibited at the Hôtel de la Marine in 2023, the cabinetmaker Pierre Renart and design studio Uchronia have taken his place with site-specific works that invite the public to take some leisurely time out. In the Cour de l’Intendant, Renart, who studied the École Boulle, has installed a spectacular modern version of a rocking hammock-type seating with carved hornbeam slats. While Uchronia’s Day Bed a monumental four-poster bed, bursting with vibrant colors and adorned with hangings and trimmings inspired by the XVIIIe century, takes center place in the Cour d’Honnneur.

London-based British designer Paul Cocksedge, whose work is displayed in the Orangerie and gardens of the Hôtel de Sully, Place des Vosges, is the Paris Design Week special guest. Using reflective and animated surfaces that mirror the Louis XIII architecture, the sky, the trees and the public, he invites visitors to take part in a game of optical confusion. "It alludes to our obsession with taking photos of ourselves on a screen," the artist said, who hopes that the experience will encourage people "to connect with each other."

The Paris Design Week Factory presents a sample of the avant-garde at four addresses in the Marais district. Espace Commines focuses on the latest design collections, curated by Thibault Huguet and Jean-Baptiste Anotin of the Meet Met Met collective. The Galerie Joseph on Rue Froissart is showcasing upcoming publishing houses, while that on Rue de Turenne is exhibiting Chinese creations entitled Chinese Way of Beauty. Ellia Art Gallery has selected the the top self-employed make-to-order artisanal designers, who work in glass, ceramics and wood. You will also find young Tunisian craftspeople renewing their art of carpetmaking, pottery, ceramics and metalwork.
