NextImg:Texas DPS ceases partnership with Austin Police Department

The Texas Department of Public Safety is temporarily ceasing its partnership with the Austin Police Department.

APD said Saturday that Texas DPS is being heavily deployed to border cities due to the expiration of Title 42. Their last day in Austin will be Saturday, May 13.

It is unknown at this time if and when the partnership will continue, but the department said it will be at least several weeks before it can be considered.

APD provided the following statement:

The department would like to take this moment to thank DPS for the work they have done to assist in keeping our community safe. Over the last several weeks, they have assisted in lowering the number of calls related to violent crime, removed stolen guns and vehicles from the streets, and recovered large quantities of illegal narcotics, as well as helping to increase traffic safety in our city.

On March 27, DPS and city leaders announced the agency would lend state troopers and special agents to help Austin police manage its ongoing staffing challenges and improve public safety.

The partnership came under scrutiny when the Travis County Attorney's Office released numbers showing the demographics of the people arrested by DPS for misdemeanors are disproportionate to the demographics of the City of Austin.

DPS Director Steven McCraw defended the troopers' work to the city council.

“If people want to accuse us of racial profiling or being indiscriminate, we have body-worn cameras,” McCraw said earlier this month.

City leaders were expected to provide an update on May 22. It is unclear if that update will still come.

CBS Austin has reached out to the City and DPS for comment.
