Aimee Lou Wood has revealed she was left feeling “ugly” after learning that she Mike White, the creator of “The White Lotus,” stuck his neck out for her during the casting process for season three.

The British actor, who is also known for her role in “Sex Education,” said that her spiral started when a producer on the show “told me how much Mike [White] had fought for me.”

“They said ‘It had to be you, no matter what HBO said,’” Wood shared in an interview with GQ, published on Tuesday.

It was honestly from the nicest place, but my little head goes: ‘HBO didn’t want me. And I know why HBO didn’t want me, it’s because I’m ugly,’” she recalled thinking. ”‘Mike had to say ‘Please let me have the ugly girl!’ That was the thing that was in my head.”

The public’s focus on Wood’s distinctive teeth likely hasn’t helped either. Wood said that while the discourse is positive, “there’s a limit” to how much she wants to hear about it.

“The whole conversation is just about my teeth, and it makes me a bit sad because I’m not getting to talk about my work. They think it’s nice because they’re not criticizing,” Wood told the magazine. “And, I have to go there… I don’t know if it was a man would we be talking about it this much? It’s still going on about a woman’s appearance.”

Wood, who has been called the “breakout star” of the show’s third season for her performance as the quirky Chelsea, has said previously that she did find the positive attention nice after “being bullied for my teeth forever.”

During an appearance on ITV’s “The Jonathan Ross Show” she did jokingly urge fans to not try and recreate her smile themselves.

“I hope people don’t start filing their teeth so they have gaps,” Wood said with a laugh.
