The White House said in a statement that the bruise on the back of President Donald Trump’s right hand is from “shaking hands all day, every day.”
“President Trump is a man of the people,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told NBC News. “His commitment is unwavering, and he proves that every single day.”
She continued: “President Trump has bruises on his hand because he’s constantly working and shaking hands all day, every day.”
The bruise was visible on Trump’s hand Monday during his visit with French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House.
A close-up photo of the bruise on Trump’s hand went viral Monday night on X after journalist Aaron Rupar pointed it out.
In Trump’s 2024 Time Person of the Year interview, Trump gave the same explanation for why he had a bruise then, saying, “It’s from shaking hands with thousands of people.”
Trump’s up-to-date medical history is a mystery. He released his medical records in 2015 before his first term in office. During the 2024 election, Trump’s opponent Kamala Harris released her medical records to show she was fit to be president, but Trump never did so, despite promising he would.

In November 2023, Trump released a letter from his personal physician saying that he was in “excellent health.”
