The White House Correspondents’ Association has dropped comedian Amber Ruffin as the headliner for this year’s annual fundraising dinner in Washington, D.C., one day after she criticized President Donald Trump’s administration on a podcast.
The decision came Saturday in a letter to members by the association’s president.
“The WHCA board has unanimously decided we are no longer featuring a comedic performance this year,” wrote Eugene Daniels, the association’s president, in a letter Saturday to members that was obtained by multiple media outlets.
“At this consequential moment for journalism, I want to ensure the focus is not on the politics of division but entirely on awarding our colleagues for their outstanding work and providing scholarship and mentorship to the next generation of journalists,” he continued.
Ruffin was announced in early February as the featured headliner for the April 26 dinner, with Daniels himself telling Politico at the time that “Amber was immediately at the top of my list” of candidates, and that he was “thrilled and honored she said yes.”

The Emmy and Tony Award-nominated performer said on Thursday’s episode of “The Daily Beast Podcast” that she has no intentions of slamming “both sides” of the political aisle with her jokes, however, stating, “I care. Like, you’re kind of a bunch of murderers.”
“It’s bonkers that we’re still acting like things are normal,” she continued at the time.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich shared an excerpt of the moment on social media Friday and slammed Ruffin as a “2nd rate comedian who is previewing the event by calling this administration ‘murderers.’”

CNN’s Brian Stelter reported Saturday that the decision “was already in the works” before the podcast was released, however, and that Daniels said he would “share more details of the plans in place” as the correspondents dinner draws closer.
