Critics are calling out President Donald Trump for saying that he’s “not joking” about possibly seeking a third term in office, which would violate the Constitution.
“There are methods which you could do it,” Trump told NBC News on Sunday.
The network asked if one option would be for Vice President JD Vance to run, then hand off the presidency to Trump.
“That’s one,” Trump said.
However, the Constitution states that no one ineligible to be president can run for vice president, either ― so Trump would not be eligible to be Vance’s running mate.
Trump said there are other scenarios, but did not elaborate.
The most obvious way for him to become legally eligible for a third term would be an amendment to the Constitution, an arduous process that would seem very unlikely. Amendments require a two-thirds vote in Congress, or a constitutional convention.
But critics said Trump might have something else in mind ― and that’s skirting the Constitution altogether, especially since he has already tried to stay in office once before after losing the White House.
