A player in the New York Islanders organization slammed a referee into the boards in a recent game, earning a suspension for “physical abuse of an official” that will carry into next season, it was announced on Wednesday.
Bridgeport Islanders minor leaguer Adam Beckman will miss the last five games of the American Hockey League season, plus five more next season, for the April 5 incident, according to the league’s website.
In the viral replay of the shocking act, Beckman skated toward the backward-skating official and shoved him into the wall during a game against the Charlotte Checkers. The official crumpled to the ice.
Beckman appeared to be surprised by the impact. Thankfully, the ref continued to officiate the game, the New York Post reported.
Beckman, a forward, has played 23 games in the NHL, all over the previous three seasons with the Minnesota Wild.
The Islanders obtained him last month from the New Jersey Devils organization in a trade.
