Of course it got personal.
President Donald Trump tried to deflect a fact check with a condescending takedown of ABC News’ Terry Moran during their interview on Tuesday. (Watch the video below.)
“Hey, they’re giving you the big break of a lifetime,” Trump said. “You know, you’re doing the interview. I picked you because, frankly, I never heard of you but that’s OK.”
As Moran was responding, Trump continued. “But I picked you, Terry. But you’re not being very nice.”
Moran, a senior national correspondent, got the gig instead of such high-profile colleagues as David Muir or George Stephanopoulos, perhaps because of Trump’s past tension with those two.
Muir’s moderating style angered Trump during a debate against Kamala Harris. Stephanopoulos’ legally problematic use of the word “rape” to describe Trump being found civilly liable for sexual abuse of E. Jean Carroll led to the network shelling out $15 million to the Trump presidential library to settle a defamation lawsuit.
Trump’s attempted takedown of Moran began when the reporter pushed back at the president’s disputed claim that Kilmar Abrego Garcia had “MS-13” tattooed on his knuckles, signifying a gang allegiance. The photo of Abrego Garcia with those markings is said to have been altered.
The Maryland man was deported to a notorious Salvadoran prison and has remained there despite a court order; his family and lawyer deny the Trump administration’s insistence that he is a gang member.
Moran attempted to move on with the interview marking Trump’s first 100 days of his second term but was rebuffed by Trump. “Terry Terry Terry, don’t do that,” the president said.
