Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick drew sharp criticism Wednesday after urging Fox News viewers to buy shares in Tesla, the electric vehicle company owned by Elon Musk.

Talking to Fox’s Jesse Watters, Lutnick impassionately pitched: “I think if you want to learn something on this show tonight, buy Tesla. It’s unbelievable that this guy’s stock is this cheap. It’ll never be this cheap again.”

Lutnick later hyped the technological advancements being made by Musk, the world’s richest person, and his company.

“When people understand the things he’s building, the robots he’s building, the technology he’s building, people are going to be dreaming of today and Jesse Watters and thinking, ‘Gosh, I should have bought Elon Musk’s stock,’” said Lutnick. “I mean, who wouldn’t invest in Elon Musk? You gotta be kidding me.”

On Jesse Watters’ show, Howard Lutnick, the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, tells viewers they should buy Tesla stock.“I think if you want to learn something on this show tonight, buy Tesla. It’s unbelievable that this guy’s stock is this cheap. It’ll never be this cheap again.”

The ringing endorsement came amid a plummet in stock value for Tesla as Musk faces mounting backlash over his support for and role in President Donald Trump’s efforts to slash public spending.

Reports of violent attacks on Teslas have surged.

Trump himself recently held what critics called a Tesla promotional event outside the White House, fueling more controversy.

Lutnick’s boosting of Musk and his company sparked outrage online, with many accusing him of potentially violating ethics rules and the Hatch Act, which prohibits federal officials from using their positions for political or financial gain.

Does the Trump administration get a commission for these endorsements?

If this cabinet secretary himself owns any of the stock he's touting on TV, he's probably committed a serious ethics offense.

If he doesn't own the stock himself, then he probably hasn't broken any laws, but is engaged in a shameful breach of trust with the audience watching. https://t.co/P1cll3pGAt

Buy Tesla stock! Ignore the flames! Everything is fine!

A flaming Tesla in the background is basically a live action metaphor for Musk’s decision making.

When Kellyanne Conway encouraged Fox viewers to buy Ivanka Trump's clothing line, the top Oversight REPUBLICAN called it "wrong" and asked the U.S. Office of Government Ethics to look into it.

Tonight, the Commerce Secretary on Fox encouraged people to buy Tesla stock.

Not to be pedantic but this is basically an endorsement and violates the SEC act ????????♂️

More blatant violations of the Hatch Act. These people are lawless.

We are still not buying Tesla!

— Evaristus Odinikaeze (@odinikaeze) March 20, 2025

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick just violated the STOCK & Hatch Act live on Fox News by telling viewers to buy Tesla stock.

Is this legal?

Today on Fox News I learned it's apparently legal for the commerce secretary to pump a stock, and it's gay to eat soup or use a straw.

The Commerce Secretary is promoting a company’s stock on live TV, and not just any company’s - the company owned by a ‘special government employee’ and the president’s biggest donor.

The corruption is the point. https://t.co/Ni2Rnu4eA3

I wonder just how many felonies were committed here
