NextImg:Trump Attacks Zelenskyy Again, Says 'America Will Not Put Up' With Ceasefire Delay

President Donald Trump lashed out at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy once again Monday as continued U.S. support for the country’s efforts to defend itself from Russia’s invasion looked in jeopardy.

In the aftermath of the pair’s extraordinary bust-up at the White House on Friday, Trump doubled down on his criticism of Zelenskyy after Ukraine’s wartime leader sought to build a stronger alliance with other world leaders.

In a Monday post on Truth Social, Trump appeared to have taken umbrage at comments Zelenskyy made over the weekend about a deal to end the war between Ukraine and Russia being “still very, very far away.”

“This is the worst statement that could have been made by Zelenskyy, and America will not put up with it for much longer!” Trump said in the post, which included a screengrab of an Associated Press report on Zelenskyy’s comments.

He added, “It is what I was saying, this guy doesn’t want there to be Peace as long as he has America’s backing and, Europe, in the meeting they had with Zelenskyy, stated flatly that they cannot do the job without the U.S.”

“Probably not a great statement to have been made in terms of a show of strength against Russia. What are they thinking?” he continued.

The outburst comes as Trump will reportedly discuss the possible suspension or complete cancellation of military aid to Ukraine with key advisers.

The New York Times reported the president will meet with top national security advisers Monday, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, for a briefing on Ukraine, where a range of options will be considered, including backing away from the final shipments of ammunition and equipment agreed by the Biden administration.

Meanwhile, Zelenskyy is meeting with King Charles III for talks in London as Europe rallies around Ukraine’s leader, who said Sunday he hopes that the country’s “relationship (with the U.S.) will continue.”

“It’s more than an occasional relationship,” he added.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron, France’s president, are leading efforts to pull together a new peace plan to present to Trump, who is said to be expecting an apology from Zelenskyy following the Oval Office blowup.

The remarkable shakeup of the geopolitical landscape follows Trump making overtures toward Russian President Vladimir Putin two weeks ago, when he labeled Zelenskyy a dictator and falsely suggested Ukraine started the war with Russia.

Then, during the shocking Oval Office exchange last week, Trump and Vice President JD Vance called Zelenskyy “disrespectful,” accused him of not being ”thankful” for U.S. support, and told him he has “no cards” with which to negotiate a deal to end the incursion of his country by Russia. The White House then canceled a scheduled press conference, and the Ukrainian president left the building without signing an expected rare minerals agreement.

Trump Lashes Out At ‘Fake News’ Ukraine Criticism

Until his latest attack, the president had said little on Ukraine since putting out a statement following the controversial meeting. In the statement, he said that Zelenskyy “is not ready for peace if America is involved.”

Over the weekend, Trump wrote on Truth Social that “we should spend less time worrying about Putin” and focus instead on cracking down on illegal migration so that “we don’t end up like Europe!”

On Monday morning, Trump was more direct, claiming he is the only U.S. president who has not given any Ukrainian land to Russia.

“The only President who gave none of Ukraine’s land to Putin’s Russia is President Donald J. Trump,” he wrote on Truth Social. “Remember that when the weak and ineffective Democrat’s criticize, and the Fake News gladly puts out anything they say!”

Russia annexed Crimea, part of Ukraine, after invading the region in 2014 when Barack Obama was president.

Trump’s outriders have signaled there may be little scope to patch up the relationship with Zelenskyy.

Elon Musk, Trump’s billionaire aide, on Monday backed calls for the U.S. to leave NATO, a move that would undermine hopes of an American security guarantee for Ukraine.

Musk backed a post on social media from Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) to “leave Nato” following Zelenskyy attending a security summit in London with other world leaders on Sunday.

Musk, who runs the cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency, also posted that same day: “What I said over two years ago was that Ukraine should seek peace or suffer severe loss of life for no gains. The latter was Zelensky’s choice. Now he wants to do that again. This is cruel and inhumane.”

Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) suggested Zelenskyy may need to step aside in order for Ukraine-Russia peace agreements to happen.

Zelesnkyy Hopes To Still Sign Minerals Deal

For his part, Zelenskyy said Sunday that he remains “ready to sign” the under-threat deal with the U.S. over Ukraine’s mineral deposits in a thread on X, formerly called Twitter.

An agreement over rare earth minerals is seen as crucial to keeping the Trump administration engaged in the war, with the president able to hail a victory for American taxpayers. Ukraine would likely get more protection from the U.S. with American workers on Ukrainian soil, though this falls short of the security guarantees sought by Zelenskyy.

Ukraine’s president also seems to have gotten the message about his supposed lack of gratitude. In a video message Sunday night, he said that “we are grateful for all the support we have received from the United States.”

“There hasn’t been a single day when we haven’t felt grateful,” he added.

Europe Eyes ‘Coalition Of The Willing’

With Trump’s next move unclear, Europe looked to fill the vacuum. During the London security summit on Sunday, 18 world leaders — mostly from Europe (although Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was also present) — met to thrash out a plan to work with Ukraine to end the war and defend the country from Russia.

“We are at a crossroads in history today,” Starmer said following the summit, as he signaled a “coalition of the willing” would be needed to secure Ukraine after any ceasefire.

He also insisted that Europe “must do the heavy lifting,” but details on what that looks like remain scant. The British leader has promised that the United Kingdom will provide “boots on the ground” and “planes in the air,” while Macron has called on NATO members to spend between 3–3.5% of gross domestic product on defense.
