MSNBC’s Jen Psaki said the first 100 days often represent the “high water mark” of a presidency and a new leader can use the goodwill of this “honeymoon phase” to advance the agenda that won them the election.
But not President Donald Trump.
“As we approach the end of Trump’s first 100 days, it seems he was pretty quick to squander whatever goodwill he came in with, and that’s not just me saying it,” Psaki said on Sunday. “Poll after poll after poll ― and I literally mean, there’s so many of them ― is making that all perfectly clear.”
Psaki showed a series of new polls that all have Trump’s approval rating in free fall, with one ― from The Washington Post ― finding him at just 39%.
His numbers on individual issues are even worse, with the president now underwater even on topics that had always been his strength such as immigration and the economy.
“I think what we’re seeing here, very clearly, is just how badly Donald Trump overplayed his hand,” she said, noting that Trump pushed his agenda by claiming he won a “mandate” during last year’s election even though he captured less than 50% of the vote.
“And that is just a fact,” Psaki said.
