“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert ripped President Donald Trump on Monday for taking what he described as a “clear bribe” in the form of a $400 million jet from Qatar, referring to those who have condemned the country’s government for “fomenting violence.”
“One world leader even said that Qatar was funding terrorism ‘at a very high level,’” Colbert said.
“That leader? Donald Trump.”
He continued, “But you know what? Donald Trump knows, Donald Trump knows that this is America. We do not negotiate with terrorists. We accept whatever they’re offering, no questions asked.”
Trump — who has defended accepting the luxury plane gift to serve as his new Air Force One — once criticized Qatar in 2017, accusing its government of supporting terrorism at a time when Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates engaged in a diplomatic blockade of the nation.
Trump, prior to the blockade ending at the close of his first term, reversed course with his criticism in 2018 by declaring that Qatar had become a “very big advocate” against funding terrorism.
As Trump faces bipartisan backlash over his plan to accept the jet, which he reportedly looks to hand over to his future presidential library after he leaves office, critics have pointed to Qatar’s financial backing of Hamas while questioning his move.
