A statue of Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky ― which stands outside the Edmonton Oilers’ home arena Rogers Place ― was discovered to have been smeared with feces early Friday.

CBC News suggested the stinky attack on the sculpture may be “the latest show of displeasure with Gretzky in recent months for his friendship with U.S. President Donald Trump” who has threatened to make Canada the 51st U.S. state and has launched a trade war via his on-off imposition of tariffs on America’s northern neighbor.

Witnesses commented on the disgusting smell.

The perpetrator remains at large and the exact motive remains unknown.

On Friday night, the Oilers condemned the defacement.

A spokesperson told CTV News: “We have zero tolerance for vandalism of any kind, especially against one of the city’s most iconic landmarks that celebrates Wayne Gretzky and his special connection with Oilers fans around the world. We are currently investigating and will take the appropriate next steps as information becomes available.”
