A Georgia Republican’s bill to rename Greenland had a lot of social media users seeing red on Tuesday.
The bill introduced by Rep. Buddy Carter would authorize President Donald Trump to purchase Greenland and then rename the autonomous Danish territory a more patriotic “Red, White and Blueland.”
Carter made sure to be as sycophantic as possible in a statement about the proposed legislation:
“America is back and will soon be bigger than ever with the addition of Red, White, and Blueland.”
“President Trump has correctly identified the purchase of what is now Greenland as a national security priority, and we will proudly welcome its people to join the freest nation to ever exist when our Negotiator-in-Chief inks this monumental deal.”
Carter also promoted the bill on social media, hoping to make “Red White & Blue Land” trend.
Although Greenland is part of Denmark, Trump has talked about acquiring it since at least 2019 and brought it up again in December while announcing his pick for ambassador to Denmark.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the president’s interest in Greenland last month and insisted, “This is in our national interest and it needs to be solved.”
Danish officials have insisted repeatedly that Greenland is not for sale, and one Danish member of the European Parliament bluntly told Trump to “fuck off.”
It seems many people on social media had a similar reaction after hearing about Carter’s bill, which he tried to promote on X, formerly Twitter.
