WASHINGTON ― Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) warned that President Donald Trump’s policies will raise costs for consumers and kick people off health care in the official rebuttal to his joint address to Congress on Tuesday.

The 48-year-old Democratic Party rising star spoke with pitch-perfect delivery live from Michigan, a battleground state that sent her to the Senate while at the same time picking a Republican to occupy the White House in November’s election.

“President Trump is trying to deliver an unprecedented giveaway to his billionaire friends,” Slotkin said. “He’s on the hunt to find trillions of dollars to pass along to the wealthiest in America. And to do that, he’s going to make you pay in every part of your life.”

“Grocery and home prices are going up, not down — and he hasn’t laid out a credible plan to deal with either,” she added.

Slotkin, a former CIA agent, previously served six years in the House, where she earned a reputation as a moderate who wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. In her response to Trump on Tuesday, Slotkin criticized the president’s and billionaire Elon Musk’s efforts to shrink the size of the federal government, which have resulted in confusion and chaos among federal workers.

“The mindless firing of people who work to protect our nuclear weapons, keep our planes from crashing, and conduct the research that finds the cure for cancer — only to rehire them two days later? No CEO in America could do that without being summarily fired,” she said.

The senator also slammed Trump for attacking Ukraine to the benefit of Russia.

“As a Cold War kid, I’m thankful it was Reagan and not Trump in office in the 1980s. Trump would have lost us the Cold War,” Slotkin said.

In his address to Congress, which ran over an hour and a half and was often detached from reality, Trump declared that “America is back” following his election to a second term and touted his policies and his many executive orders reshaping the government.

“The golden age of America has just begun. It will be like nothing that has ever been seen before,” Trump said to applause in the chamber.

Democrats made many decorum-breaching protests in the room. Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.) held a sign next to Trump as he walked into the chamber that said, “This is not normal.” Members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus also held up signs that said, “False” and “Musk steals.” Many of Trump’s claims were met with boos and laughter from the Democratic side of the aisle.

Numerous House Democrats walked out as Trump spoke, including Reps. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) and Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.), who stood and turned their backs to the president, then left the chamber. Frost wore a shirt with the words, “No Kings Live Here.”

“Tonight, the American people saw a desperate liar stand in front of a podium and spit out excuse after excuse as to why he hasn’t been able to make your life better,” Frost said in a statement. “Why he can’t make eggs cheaper, why he can’t lower housing costs, why the stock market is tanking under his watch, why innocent immigrants and trans people are to blame. All lies.”

Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) was even booted from the chamber by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) after causing a disturbance by yelling at the president that he has no mandate to disrupt health care for millions of people.

“I’ll accept the punishment, but it’s worth it to let people know that there are some of us who are going to stand up against this president’s desire to cut Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security,” Green told reporters afterward.

Republican lawmakers, meanwhile, chided their Democratic colleagues for their behavior in the chamber.

“The Democrats are showing why they lost in graphic detail tonight,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) remarked in a post on social media.
