Selena Gomez says comments about her weight from online body shamers have left her feeling a “tad bitter.”

“Everyone just has something to say, and it’s really making me sad and — not even sad because, no, I’m not a victim, everyone — I just think it’s made me a tad bitter, and I feel really guilty for saying that, but it’s true,” the actor said while appearing on Monday’s episode of Jay Shetty’s podcast “On Purpose” alongside her fiancé, Benny Blanco.

Gomez was diagnosed with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease, in 2013. In 2023, Gomez opened up on TikTok about how the medication she takes to manage the disease causes her to gain weight.

The “Emilia Pérez” star, 32, explained that she tries her best to avoid reading comments about herself on the internet, but she admitted sometimes she can’t help but spot the unsavory things her critics say.

“There’s just so many different things that come up in my face, that I can’t help but see … I fall victim to looking at things,” Gomez said. “I’m human, so of course sometimes I read things.”

The “Only Murders in the Building” actor went on to tell host Shetty that keeping social media apps off of her phone helps “combat” the negativity.

“But I do, most of the time, ignore most of everything. I don’t have anything on my phone at the moment. So, there are ways to combat it,” Gomez continued. “I understand the power of what social media is. It’s just tricky.”

Blanco, who told Shetty he “doesn’t care about” reading comments online, sided with Gomez’s sentiments, adding, “There’s always going to be someone trying to bring you down. Hating is free. So people are going to be hating all over the world.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Gomez described the many ways the public unfairly dissects her simply because she’s a woman.

“It’s the way I’m not white enough, I’m not Mexican enough … nobody cares about those kind of things with men,” she added.
