Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has a message for Andrew Tate and his brother, Tristan Tate: You’re not welcome here.

The pair, who are dual British-U.S. citizens, unexpectedly had their travel restrictions lifted and promptly fled to Florida from Romania, where they have been charged with human trafficking.

DeSantis told reporters Thursday that “Florida is not a place where you’re welcome with that type of conduct” and expressed hope that James Uthmeier, the state’s attorney general, will “be able to deal with this.”

“I don’t know how it came to this,” DeSantis continued, distancing himself from Andrew Tate, an outspoken Donald Trump supporter and self-described “absolute misogynist.”

“We were not involved, we were not notified, I found out through the media that this was something that was happening,” he added.

Other politicians were a little more blunt.

“Why is the Trump administration importing sex traffickers?” Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) wrote on X, formerly called Twitter.

Romania’s anti-organized crime agency, DIICOT, said it released the siblings after it received a “request to modify the obligation preventing the defendants from leaving Romania,” but did not specify who made the request.

Reporting by the Financial Times, however, suggested that the Trump administration likely pressured Romanian authorities to return the brothers’ U.S. passports and allow them to travel.

The outlet said Trump’s special envoy, Richard Grenell, met with the Romanian foreign minister at the Munich Security Conference earlier this month, having brought up the Tates’ case in a phone call before the event.

Grenell also complained on social media around that time about U.S. Agency for International Development funds being used to “target” conservatives around the world. “Romania is the latest example,” he added, replying to a post that mentioned Tristan Tate.

Trump told reporters Thursday afternoon he didn’t know anything about the siblings’ release.

Romanian officials arrested the brothers in 2022 on charges of human trafficking and forming an organized crime group to sexually exploit women. Andrew Tate was also charged with rape. The two have denied the allegations.

Andrew Tate has faced additional legal scrutiny for alleged money laundering and sexual intercourse with a minor.

The siblings also face charges of sexual aggression in the United Kingdom, where the allegations “date back at least 10 years,” according to the BBC.

The brothers must return to Romania for a judicial hearing in March or risk being placed on an international wanted list.
