In a note to members Wednesday, the White House Correspondents’ Association president warned that the Trump administration’s new system for working with reporters has compromised the integrity of its dispatches.
The email to the pool of reporters covering the White House from WHCA president Eugene Daniels comes a day after White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the Trump administration would now pick and choose which reporters follow the president each day, taking over the duty historically relegated to the WHCA and making room for non-legacy media outlets.
“As the White House is controlling the process, the WHCA cannot ensure that the reports filed by government-selected poolers will be held to the same standards that we have had in place for decades,” said Daniels, a reporter at Politico.
The WHCA listserv, he added, is “no longer the place to send your pool notes and pool reports,” and outlets must decide on their own whether they’ll participate in the Trump-appointed pools.
For decades, the WHCA has determined the rotation of journalists who fill spots dedicated for radio, television, print and wire service reporters. As part of that system, reporters following the president that day send out a “pool report” to other members.

HuffPost was among the outlets kicked out of Wednesday’s rotation, along with the Reuters wire service. Leavitt said HuffPost would come up in the rotation later but added that it was a “privilege” to participate in the system and that HuffPost “should be grateful.”
In his email Wednesday, Daniels said Leavitt’s claims that the change was needed to give access to new media was misinformed.
“We have more than 60 news organizations that are a part of our different pools,” he wrote. “Those news organizations include those that are strictly nonpartisan and those that lean left or the right. For years, we have consistently expanded the WHCA’s membership and its pool rotations to facilitate the inclusion of new and emerging media.”
Daniels said the WHCA is still seeking answers to several questions, including how the White House plans to create its reporter rotation and whether it’s choosing by outlet or individual journalist.

“As we have for decades, the WHCA stands ready to assist in pool organization, travel planning, and logistical support – and will never stop advocating on behalf of our members,” Daniels wrote. “But we cannot facilitate a pool where the President, rather than the press corps and the audience they represent, decides who can and cannot cover him.”
The annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, he added, will proceed as scheduled on April 26.
