President Donald Trump had people cracking up over one of his guests during a serious announcement at the White House’s traditional Easter Egg Roll on Monday.
The commander in chief was flanked by first lady Melania Trump and a person in a giant Easter Bunny costume as he solemnly remarked on the death of Pope Francis from the historic Truman Balcony.
After announcing he had signed an executive order calling for flags to fly at half-staff in honor of the late pontiff, Trump called Pope Francis a “good man” who “worked hard” and “loved the world.”
“It’s an honor to do that,” he said of his order.
During his address, the president also told guests that his White House was “bringing religion back in America.”
“We’re honoring Jesus Christ and we’re going to honor Jesus Christ very powerfully throughout our lives,” he said.
Despite the somewhat serious tone of Trump’s comments, people online couldn’t help but comment on his cuddly looking guest.
“Pope’s dead [somberly] fetch the gigantic bunny outfit, I need to make a statement,” one person wrote on Bluesky.
Several jokingly wondered if Vice President JD Vance was forced to suit up as penance for rattling the Vatican during the pope’s final hours.
Officials told the press that Trump’s second-in-command had what they respectfully described as an “exchange of opinions” with a top cardinal the day prior to his audience with the pontiff.
Others poked fun at the current chaos at the Pentagon amid calls for Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to step down following multiple scandals.
