A former U.S. attorney whose death at age 43 sparked conspiracy theories appears to have died naturally, police said Tuesday.

Jessica Aber, who served during the Biden administration and resigned on Donald Trump’s Inauguration Day, was found dead in her Virginia home on Saturday. The news generated suspicion because of the high-profile cases she handled.

But the Alexandria Police Department doused speculation with a statement on X, formerly Twitter.

“At this time, detectives have found no evidence suggesting that her death was caused by anything other than natural causes,” the department wrote.

Aber, the former U.S. attorney for the eastern district of Virginia, investigated cases involving alleged war crimes, intelligence leaks, international terrorism and espionage. Many on social media took that to mean she had built up her share of enemies and pointed to foul play.

Other information also emerged Tuesday to quell the talk. Two friends of hers told The Washington Post that Aber had a serious medical condition. The newspaper did not name the condition for privacy’s sake.

NBC News previously reported that a family friend said earlier in the investigation that law enforcement believed her death was related to a longtime medical issue. Two former Justice Department officials had also told the network earlier that investigators found no reason to suspect foul play.

Cops on Tuesday emphasized that the case was not closed.

“The investigation is ongoing and will remain open until the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) returns a final ruling on the cause and manner of death,” Alexandria police said.

Aber was nominated by President Joe Biden in 2021. Erik S. Siebert, who now holds her former post, said: “She was unmatched as a leader, mentor, and prosecutor, and she is simply irreplaceable as a human being.”
