Those who’ve lived in desert climates know: The dry air takes a toll on the skin. That’s because, according to the Skin and Cancer Institute, the desert’s dry air and lack of humidity strips and sucks moisture away from the surface of the skin, resulting in a compromised skin barrier, dehydration and itchiness.
This conundrum makes hydration-rich skin care that much more important for helping keep the largest organ in your body nourished and healthy. We combed through skin care across the internet for the ones that desert-bound reviewers say help supplement moisture and offset their bone-dry surroundings. Read on for some of their non-negotiable products for weathering the desert, below.

Promising reviews: "I'm glad I asked my dermatologist for recommendation for an all over body cream. I live in the desert and it's a verydry climate. My usual dry spots like the heels of my feet and my elbows are gone. No more dry cracked skin. This product really works" — Weez
"I am older, live in the desert southwest and have sensitive, dry skin -a triple whammy. I am constantly on the lookout for a good moisturizer and have tried just about everything out there. It is especially a challenge in the winter when the humidity is practically non-existent. Anything with shea butter is usually my go to, but became a convert when I found this. It is thick but is quickly absorbed and keeps my skin moist for hours. It has helped blend lighten sun spots and the fine lines around my eyes just as well as the most expensive stuff I've tried. I know they say not to use the same creme on both your body and face, but this really does double duty. A jar lasts awhile and you don't have to break the bank to buy it. Well worth at least a try." — itsizzi
Promising review: "I am 32 years old and live in a dry desert environment. My skin feels tight and dry most of the time. I’d like to believe I’m a skincare junkie and I have a 10 step skincare routine. I’ve experimented with different moisturizers but have never used anything quite like this. It’s the only moisturizer that I’ve used that leaves my skin feeling plump and supple. I do use it day and night. I will continue returning back to this product and it is highly recommended to those who have dry skin. NEVER be" — MarianaAlmazan1
Promising review: "First off I have super dry skin and live out in the desert. It has been challenging to find a moisturizer that can help my skin stay moist. The only Moisturizer that has worked is the Tatcha Dewy Skin cream. That stuff is $69.00 so I was looking for something with a better price. The Laneige Water Bank cream works just as good if not better!! The Tatcha cream would always leave a bit of a residue and would get on my pillow which I didn't mind. Sometimes it would melt into my eyes which is annoying. The Laneige moisturizer leaves no residue. My skin feels hydration all day. Works well under makeup. Also I love the very light clean scent it has. I think I found my new HG ." — Breanna Ramirez
Its blend of five ceramides, shea butter and glycerin infuses hydration back into the skin while supporting a healthy skin barrier. I also love how fast-absorbing it is.

Promising review: "This stuff is incredible for my combo dry/oily skin. I moved to a desert area and the humidity hovers between 5-20% my skin has suffered and always feels tight and gets super flaky. this stuff has transformed my skin. Even my undereyes and hands. It feels like nothing on my skin but a weightless lotion (zero greasy feeling) and I first thought there was no way this would help me. But I was so wrong. I use it night and day (under makeup it’s gorgeous) and my skin no longer flakes, or pulls tight around my eyes or overcompensates with pools of oil on my nose and forehead. No breakouts in 6 months of use!! This works better for my eyes than layers of Vaseline at night (somehow!?). I wake up with the softest skin. No flaking and (I hate when people say this but here goes)My skin looks plump. Noticeabley so! I’m a huge fan of this cream and also Belief Peat eye cream. 2 great products for aging skin ????????" — Sleeeepy
Promising review: "I live in the desert and need something to keep my skin hydrated overnight. This definitely helps! It's thicker than I anticipated, which is actually good for putting on just before bed." — anna
Promising reviews: "I read a ton of reviews, several articles, and a ton of lists that constantly list this product as something that's worth the hype and something that you need....it lives up the the hype. I'm a 52 year old female that has always taken care of my skin and always tried new products as well as continually stuck to the products that I KNOW work through personal use and experience. I also have very dry skin and live in the desert so I'm constantly looking for and trying new products that help keep my skin hydrated. This helps with hydration and gives me 'glass skin' as well as keeping my skin soft and wrinkle free.
A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY so this bottle should last quite a while.
Definitely lives up to the hype and for sure worth the small price for a good sized bottle.
The consistency is what you would think...that of snail mucin! Slimy, but not too slimy and gross. It absorbs into the skin pretty quickly, too.
After washing my skin I use a toner or micellar water, apply the snail mucin, then I apply the snail mucin moisturizer (from the same brand as the snail mucin), wait for it to absorb into my skin then apply an SPF 30+ for the day or a night moisturizer cream for the night.
As for scent I haven't noticed a scent at all and I have had no reaction from it with my sensitive skin.
If you're debating buying this product, just pull the trigger and do it, you won't be disappointed." — Cheri McG

Promising review: "I live in a desert and have very dry sensitive skin. I use this every day. It’s a nice refreshing pick me up for my skin." — Crystal
Promising review: "This is the absolute best lip repair in the world. We live in the desert where it often reaches 130 degrees and is obviously very dry. This is the only thing I have found that keeps my lips from cracking. It has a very gentle smell and taste, it stays on for quite a while and does not feel greasy or sticky. I use it before bed and my lips are ridiculously soft in the morning." — Jerrica Wentz
"I live in Phoenix Arizona. We really only have 2 types of weather. Perfectly beautiful or surface of the sun hot. No matter what the weather is, its ridiculously dry! Our extremely dry desert climate wreaks havoc on our skin and lips. I'm an Esthetician and have access to numerous products so I can't even begin to explain how many different types of lip therapy products I've tried yet I'm always disappointed. However, This lip repair is incredible! It's clear, smooth, the perfect consistency and super long lasting. I wear it all day and night now. I even wear it under all my lipsticks. Especially the long wearing mattes. This lip repair is NO JOKE! The day I received it, my lips were extremely dry, cracked and peeling. I saturated my lips with the lip repair and kept them saturated constantly for the first 24 hrs. I then did a good lip exfoliation to remove excess dry flaky skin then kept my lips completely saturated for another 24 hrs. What's incredible is that in just 48 hrs, my lips were completely transformed back to being healthy, smooth and plump. Even the natural, vibrant, pink color of my lips has been restored as well. I'm kicking myself for not taking a before pic. This lip repair is now a permanent part of my everyday life! I WILL NEVER BE WITHOUT IT! Thank you Aquaphor!" — Sunshine
I myself live in the dry desert of Los Angeles, and I swear by Bag Balm for bringing back to life the dry, cracked skin on my lips, hands, feet and face. The 4-ounce tin is a mainstay on my nightstand, and I like the tube version for taking with me on the go. The tube's slanted applicator also makes it easy to apply straight onto the lips.
Promising review: "This old fashioned salve is the best treatment around for dry feet, especially cracked heels from living in the desert climate. Apply at bedtime and slip on short socks!" — M. Fredendall
Promising reviews: "Boyfriend works in the desert. He loves this stuff." — melaina pitzer
Promising review: "I love this serum! I live in the desert so hydration is a must. This makes my skin feel and look sooo incredibly soft, bouncy, healthy, glowing, and hydrated! And it made my skin feel/look that way all day too!! The formula isn’t sticky or greasy feeling AT ALL, which is hard to find for HA serums. It applies easily to skin, doesn’t smell, and actually feels like it’s absorbing into the skin and not just sitting on top of it. And that ingredient list?? Unmatched! It is such a perfect HA serum. I have normal skin (oily during summer, dry during winter) that can lean a little more on the oily side from living in the desert, so this is a great serum for my skin all year round. I’m in love!!" — Monikuuhhh
I depend on this serum in the desert climate where I live to help repair my skin barrier; my skin drinks it up, and I have it on subscription to make sure I never run out. I love that it calms and balances my sensitive, adult acne-prone skin by hydrating instead of stripping it like most acne antidotes.
It's meant to be applied after your nighttime moisturizer, ideally before bedtime, as its high zinc concentration leaves a white cast.
Promising review: "Absolutely LOVE Slug! The quality and texture is amazing. Immediate result in the overall condition of my skin. I live in the desert, rarely able to acheive and maintain an adequate level of moisture in my skin. Slug balm to the rescue!!! Thank you Slug Crew ????????" — Kelli H.
It's available in up to three sizes.
Promising reviews: "I love this sunscreen. It’s not sticky, or leaves a white cast. It has never peeled off. I wear it in the hot desert days (I live in the desert) and under my makeup. I highly recommended it" — SoSoJ
