Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-N.Y.) brother took to TikTok to clarify a rumor that he was charged for trafficking fentanyl.
On Tuesday, Gabriel Ocasio-Cortez duetted a TikTok that claimed Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s brother is a man named Matthew and that he was charged with trafficking fentanyl.
“I’m the brother,” Gabriel Ocasio-Cortez said in his TikTok. “My name’s not Matthew. I have no idea why they’re posting this. I work with the homeless. I have nothing to do with this story, which isn’t real. Please find something better to do with your time.”
The rumor came from a social media post that falsely claimed Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s brother was in possession of $1.2 million worth of fentanyl, according to Snopes. A satirical news site posted an entire article dedicated to the made-up story.
In a follow-up TikTok post, Gabriel Ocasio-Cortez expressed how dangerous the false rumors are, saying that if 1 million people saw the post and only 1% believed it, that’s still 10,000 people.
“That’s all it takes to start to get somebody that’s a little bit radicalized, somebody that’s willing to pick up their guns and go do something,” he said. “And it wouldn’t be the first time somebody’s tried. That’s the society that we’re in, so things like this are just more serious than ever, and you can’t slander people.”
According to Business Insider, Gabriel Ocasio-Cortez was the one who submitted his sister’s name to Brand New Congress, an organization that recruited progressive candidates for Congress.
