A babysitter working on the outskirts of Great Bend, Kansas, experienced Monday night what many on social media are calling a real-life “nightmare” when she found a man hiding under one of the children’s beds, the Barton County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

“When the victim attempted to show the child there was nothing under the bed, she came face-to-face with a male suspect who was hiding there,” the state on Facebook reads. “An altercation ensued with the babysitter and one child was knocked over in the struggle.”

“The suspect then fled the scene before deputies arrived,” the statement continued.

The sheriff’s office said deputies responded to the babysitter’s emergency call about 10:30 p.m., and she identified the suspect as 27-year-old Martin Villalobos Jr., a prior resident who violated a protection-from-abuse court order to stay away from the property.

Deputies combing the area ultimately spotted Villalobos on the same block the following morning and arrested him after a short chase. He is being held at the Barton County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bond.

Villalobos was booked on charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, child endangerment, felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer and violation of a protection from abuse order, the sheriff’s office said Wednesday.

Authorities did not release information about Villalobos and his relationship to the children.

Facebook users expressed shock in the comments of Wednesday’s statement.

“I’m glad everyone’s safe but that poor babysitter will probably never babysit again and those children will never believe there’s not a monster under the bed. A literal living nightmare,” wrote one person, with another commenting: “So glad the babysitter listened.”
