Speaking at the AFI Life Achievement Award Gala earlier this year, Watts reflected on their first meeting, saying of the time that they waited at the audition: "We covered everything, what movies we loved, what friends we had in common, our parents, schools, parties, boyfriends, teenage stuff.”
Watts then revealed that she was “scared” because she’d missed the bus back home, and was touched when Kidman offered to drop her off on her way home in a taxi “even though it was 20 minutes out of her way and it was an extra $15.00 on the meter."
The two women ended up growing even closer when they were both cast in the Australian coming-of-age movie Flirting in 1991, with Watts stating that this job is what really solidified their friendship.
Ever since, Kidman and Watts have been best friends, and have supported each other through both their professional careers and personal lives over the years.

For context, Watts and Schreiber dated between 2005 and 2016 and share two children together.
They are thought to still be on good terms after their split, and they both married other people last year; Watts tied the knot with Billy Crudup, and Schreiber wed Taylor Neisen.

“I heard a story that you asked Naomi first if it was OK,” Schreiber said, to which Kidman immediately replied: “Of course!”
Schreiber then added to the journalist: “Isn’t that amazing? That’s how close they are.”

When asked about the situation, Watts said: “We always check in; we’re besties. That was very kind of her to do that.”
