Rachel Maddow’s dressing-down of MSNBC this week for allegedly mistreating workers may have had a more personal component.

The Guardian reported Tuesday that the majority of Maddow’s staff has been gutted.

However, Maddow will retain her executive producer, Cory Gnazzo, and other senior producers, the newspaper wrote, citing “two people directly familiar with the matter.”

Staffers being let go have the choice to apply for new jobs at the company, the report added.

The same offer goes for staffers who produced Joy Reid’s “The ReidOut,” which got canceled and prompted Maddow, perhaps the news network’s biggest star, to reprimand her employer on the air Monday.

She excoriated MSNBC for removing the “non-white” Reid and Alex Wagner from their high-profile evening hosting gigs and criticized the treatment of behind-the-camera personnel confronted by job loss.

“Dozens of producers and staffers, including some who are among the most experienced and most talented and most specialist producers in the building, are facing being laid off,” she said. “They’re being invited to reapply for new jobs. That has never happened at this scale in this way before when it comes to programming changes, presumably because it’s not the right way to treat people. And it’s inefficient and it’s unnecessary, and it kind of drops the bottom out of whether or not people feel like this is a good place to work.”

An MSNBC source insisted to The Guardian that the layoffs are not widespread.

Maddow has returned to hosting five days a week during the first 100 days of Donald Trump’s presidency. She will revert to Mondays only afterward.

Wagner had occupied the part-time Tuesday to Friday slot in Maddow’s place since 2022, so their staffers overlapped. Former White House press secretary Jen Psaki takes over that four-day-a-week gig in April. Wagner is being reassigned from the network.
