Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) suggested first lady Melania Trump should be deported in an ill-conceived attempt to scold President Donald Trump for his attempt to kill birthright citizenship.
During an anti-Trump administration march in the Westwood area of Los Angeles Saturday, the longtime congresswoman said the president was attempting to undo a constitutional right for those born in the U.S.
“When he talks about birthright, and he’s going to undo the fact that the Constitution allows those who are born here, even if the parents are undocumented, they have a right to stay in America,” she began.
“If he wants to start looking so closely to find those who were born here and their parents were undocumented, maybe he ought to first look at Melania,” Waters continued in a video of her comments. “We don’t know whether or not her parents were documented. And maybe we better just take a look.”

Waters, 86, missed on several fronts. Melania Trump was born in Slovenia, then part of Yugoslavia, relocated to the U.S. on a visa to work as a model, and became a citizen after marrying Donald Trump, outlets noted. Her parents were sworn in as American citizens in 2018 after she sponsored them so they could receive their green card first. (Ironically, they benefited from “chain migration,” an emphasis on family reunification which Donald Trump denounced during his first term.)
In January, Donald Trump issued an executive order to try to end birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants despite it being protected by the 14th amendment. Judges blocked the order shortly after.

“We are here because we are not going to let Trump, we’re not going to let Elon Musk, his co-president, or anybody else take the United States Constitution down.” Waters told the crowd Saturday as Democrats try to regroup months since Trump retook office.
But her message fizzled in an off moment that got highlighted by right-wing media.
