Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney offered a subtle but sharp response when asked what he was really thinking during Tuesday’s Oval Office meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
During a press conference, The Toronto Star’s Tonda MacCharles noted she had been watching Carney’s facial expressions during the sit-down and was curious as to what had been going through his mind — particularly as Trump spoke about “erasing the artificial border” between America and Canada and mocked Carney’s predecessor, Justin Trudeau.
Carney raised his eyebrows and appeared surprised at multiple comments made by Trump.
The Canadian leader replied: “Well … thank you for, I guess, your question.”
Then he pointedly added: “I’m glad that you couldn’t tell what was going through my mind.”
Carney went on to tackle the latter part of the question, reminding the reporter how he’d told Trump that Canada is not for sale — despite Trump’s talk about turning it into the 51st state.
