A personal bag containing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s government identification and a wad of cash was stolen from a Washington, D.C., area restaurant on Sunday, HuffPost confirmed with the department.

Noem had her Homeland Security badge, passport, driver’s license, $3,000 cash, checkbook, apartment keys, makeup and medication in the bag, CNN first reported on Monday.

A Homeland Security spokesperson told HuffPost that the large amount of cash was intended to be used to “treat her family to dinner, activities, and Easter gifts.”

“We can confirm this occurred last night. Her entire family was in town including her children and grandchildren,” the spokesperson said.

Noem, the former governor of South Dakota, has three children and four grandchildren.

The secretary was under the protection of the U.S. Secret Service at the time of the incident, CNN noted, citing a law enforcement source who said that security footage revealed a white man in a medical mask appearing to take the bag and leave the restaurant.

The Secret Service also told the outlet it was monitoring signs of unauthorized financial transactions using Noem’s personal belongings.

HuffPost reached out to the Secret Service for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

Since taking office, Noem has sought photo opportunities at every turn, accompanying immigration officers on early-morning raids and visiting not just the U.S. border, but also the Salvadoran mega-prison where President Donald Trump is housing deported immigrants.
