Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance had to deal with yet another embarrassing clip from 2021 suddenly resurfacing on Tuesday.
Vance gave an assessment of his political future during a 2021 interview with YouTuber Viva Frei, aka David Freiheit, that doesn’t sound great in hindsight.
During the interview, which took place a year before Vance was elected to represent Ohio in the U.S. Senate, he said: “I’m sure there’s all kinds of ways in which I would be a totally terrible political candidate.”
He added, “I’m not worried about being able to take a lot of crap.”
Considering Vance’s campaign for the nation’s No. 2 job has been rife with weird moments, he may have been on to something back in 2021.
Here’s a brief and not-at-all-comprehensive checklist of some of the more cringeworthy incidents so far:
- He repeatedly attacked childless women;
- He suggested that people should rely on their family members for child care;
- He made fun of a Miss Teen USA contestant who struggled with mental health issues and then refused to apologize;
- He kept spreading a racist lie about Haitian immigrants;
- He said he was willing to consider breaking the law for Donald Trump.
The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Vance’s 2021 comments about his political future.
However, users of X, formerly Twitter, seemed to think Vance should have stuck with his gut back then.
