President Donald Trump and high-level officials in his administration are still dealing with the fallout after The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg reported on a group chat where plans to attack the Iran-backed Houthi militants were discussed.

More examples of weak cybersecurity among administration officials have emerged since Goldberg first explained how he was unintentionally added to the secretive chat on the messaging app Signal.

Meanwhile, major cuts to federal programs are still taking place and jobs are being slashed.

Hakeem Jeffries Says Republicans ‘Panicking’ About Florida Special Elections

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said Republicans seem to be “panicking” about two special elections in Florida that would normally be easy wins for the GOP, but where Democrats may have made some unexpected gains.

“Donald Trump won those two districts, respectively, by 30 and 37 points,” Jeffries told reporters at his weekly briefing. “How is it that they are even competitive at this point?"

He's referring to the April 1 special elections in Florida's 1st congressional district and 6th congressional district. These House seats were left vacant by former GOP Rep. Mike Waltz, who is now President Donald Trump’s national security advisor, and former GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz, who opted not to run for reelection amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

Despite these being reliably conservative districts, the Democratic candidates in both of these races have outraised their GOP challengers. A University of Florida professor of political science also noted on social media he’s heard there’s an internal poll showing Randy Fine, the GOP candidate in the 1st congressional district, down by two points.

“Why are Republicans panicking in deep red districts?” Jeffries wondered aloud. “It’s because their agenda is unpopular.”

He said there's been a recent pattern of Democrats winning in special elections and flipping seats previously held by Republicans. He cited recent elections in Iowa, in New York and in Pennsylvania. Beyond that, he said, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which is the fundraising arm for House Democrats, raised more money in January than it ever has in a January in an election off-year, outraising the House GOP that month by $4 million.

“One thing is clear: electorally, Republicans are on the run,” Jeffries said. “In places where Republicans should not simply be winning, but winning easily.”
