A former Food and Drug Administration commissioner declared Wednesday that Donald Trump is dismantling decades of medical and scientific advances and issued a dire warning about the president’s cuts to the federal government.
“The reason we are able to live long and productive lives are because of the investment — not because we’re smarter today — but because the investment we made 50, 75 years ago. And that’s being destroyed,” said Dr. David Kessler, who served as FDA head under presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
“And it’s across the board. We have to rescind these cuts. Enough is enough.”
Kessler’s remarks to MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow arrive as the president’s war against “wasteful” spending — pushed by billionaire Elon Musk — reaches 10,000 federal workers at the Department of Health and Human Services as mass layoffs begin at a number of agencies this week.
Among the federal workers impacted by the sweeping HHS cuts are the Centers for Disease Control’s in vitro fertilization team, those looking to prevent childhood lead poisoning, staffers with Meals on Wheels and employees who administer the Head Start program.
“I think they’re endangering the lives of all Americans,” said Kessler of the Trump administration’s cuts.
Kessler also served as chief science officer of President Joe Biden’s White House Covid-19 response team and warned of the public health disaster that could lie ahead.
“We are less safe today because of these cuts that have happened the last several days ... I wonder whether the president really even knows the extent of what has been done,” he said.

He went on to describe the cuts as “devastating,” “haphazard,” “thoughtless” and “chaotic,” adding that time is running out to undo the damage.
“The president has to be informed of what the extent of these cuts are. We have maybe a week before this becomes beyond fixable,” he said.
