Donald Trump is catching flak for wearing a blue suit to Pope Francis’ funeral, and social media users aren’t holding back their opinions.

The president and first lady Melania Trump attended the religious leader’s funeral Saturday. After photos and footage from the ceremony hit the internet, the Republican faced criticism online for his attire.

Men reportedly were expected to wear a formal black suit, black tie and a black lapel pin, while Trump clearly opted for a noticeably different hue.

During the funeral at Vatican City’s St. Peter’s Square, in which Trump was seated in the front row, he wore a dark blue suit paired with a matching tie and American flag pin.

Social media users on X, formerly Twitter, sounded off over Trump’s ensemble, with some accusing him of wanting to be “the center of attention.”

“Of course Trump is the only jackass wearing a blue suit and blue tie to a funeral….such an embarrassment,” one user wrote.

Another commented, “A blue suit? Donald Trump couldn’t even be respectful and wear a black suit to Pope Francis’ funeral like the rest of world leaders. He always has to stick out and try and be the center of attention.”

“Trump’s big trip to Europe for the popes funeral included a disrespectful blue suit instead of black, texting during the ceremony, and then falling asleep,” someone else added.

Trump was not the only world leader whose attire was questioned.

Former President Joe Biden also was side-eyed for wearing a blue tie, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was criticized for wearing no tie at all.

While the Vatican doesn’t note any particular funeral dress code on its website, a source told People that attire for Saturday’s ceremony was unrestricted.

“Attendees wore what they considered to be appropriate attire for such a solemn occasion,” the insider said.

A separate user argued that the images circulating the internet were altered, writing, “They just upped the saturation. There are others wearing what looks like dark blue suits, they were just were a darker shade of blue than Trump’s. They may even be a dark gray.”

Another called Trump’s choice of color not “the end of the world,” but noted it was “distinct” enough for others to notice.

“You can see how certain shades of blue almost look black. This is obvious when the fabric is surrounded by true black fabrics,” the user wrote alongside side-by-side images of Trump and Biden at the funeral. “Is it the end of the world? No. But it is distinct.”

HuffPost has reached out to the White House for comment.

While Trump hasn’t publicly commented on the suit backlash, he wrote in an April 21 Truth Social post that he and the first lady were “looking forward to” attending Francis’ funeral. The pontiff died April 21 at age 88.

In a separate post, he added, “Rest in Peace Pope Francis! May God Bless him and all who loved him!”
