A Wisconsin dog has been rescued after his taste for treats landed him in trouble this week.

“Lil Murphy was simply trying to get the last Milk-Bone when he got stuck,” the Whitefish Bay Police Department wrote in a Wednesday Facebook post.

The post included images of the small brown and white dog with a plastic jar of dog biscuits stuck on his head, as well as photos of the jar being removed with scissors.

The department added that Lil Murphy’s owners had first attempted to take the container off themselves “for over an hour.” When that failed, they sought help, and went to the police station because the veterinarian’s office was closed.

A video shared by ABC News showed the hapless canine getting pets and encouragement throughout the ordeal.

While Lil Murphy’s tale had a happy ending, food jars can pose a real risk to animals. Also this week, a stray dog in Illinois got a plastic bucket of cheeseballs stuck on his head and was unable to eat or drink for days before being rescued. (That dog has since been named Bucket Head and, according to East St. Louis animal rescue group Gateway Pet Guardians, is “super affectionate with everyone he meets.”)

Other kinds of food packaging can also be dangerous. The Food and Drug Administration warns that if animals stick their heads into some bags used for snack packaging ― like Mylar potato chip bags ― the bags can “shrink-wrap” over their faces, causing suffocation. The agency recommends keeping such bags away from pets and cutting them up before disposing of them in the trash.
