President Donald Trump promised a “boom” multiple times in a matter of seconds Thursday in response to nosediving markets brought on by his new tariffs. That prompted an explosion of snide responses on social media.
“Boom might not be the best choice of word,” one person on X wrote.
Asked about the stocks’ decline, Trump pivoted to a dubiously optimistic outlook: “The markets are gonna boom. The stock is gonna boom. The country’s gonna boom.” He mentioned “boom” one more time for good measure.
Trump assessed a 10% blanket tariff on foreign products, and added harsher levies on major trade partners like China and the European Union. The president said the measures are meant to increase domestic production, but many observers on X are seeing destruction. As in “boom.”
