Oscars host Conan O’Brien didn’t have to name President Donald Trump on Sunday to slam him for cozying up to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The comedian ― just prior to a tribute to music icon Quincy Jones ― used a segment to remark on “Anora” having a “good night” as the Sean Baker film took home, at that point, two awards. (It ultimately had five wins, including one in the Best Picture category.)
That’s when he made a not-so-subtle swipe at Trump.
“I guess Americans are excited to see somebody finally stand up to a powerful Russian,” quipped O’Brien, whose joke got applause from the crowd.
“Anora,” the big winner on Oscars night, is a comedy-drama that sees sex worker Anora “Ani” Mikheeva (played by Best Actress winner Mikey Madison) get married to Ivan “Vanya” Zakharov (played by Mark Eydelshteyn), who is the son of a Russian oligarch.
The marriage, however, faces a sea of challenges when the news reaches Zakharov’s family in his home country.
O’Brien’s dig comes just days after Trump and Vice President JD Vance publicly berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a contentious Oval Office clash.
