Chasten Buttigieg critiqued double standards at Fox News as he highlighted the different ways the conservative network has covered officials who travel on official trips with family.
The husband of Biden Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg pointed out that in January 2023, Fox News grilled Pete for bringing his spouse on an official trip.
But the network didn’t appear to mind when newly-named Trump Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy (a former contributor on Fox) traveled with his family on Air Force One for President Donald Trump’s Daytona 500 visit this weekend.
“I remember when Fox News absolutely melted when a certain Secretary took a family member on a presidential delegation,” Chasten Buttigieg wrote on X, formerly Twitter, in response to a video of the trip with Trump that Duffy shared online.
“Let’s see how this one plays out,” he added.
Indeed, two years ago, Pete Buttigieg faced questioning from Fox’s Bret Baier over his husband’s presence on a presidential delegation to the Invictus Games, the sporting event founded by Prince Harry for wounded service members.
“I led the American delegation as one of the great honors of my time in this job,” Pete Buttigieg explained to Baier at the time. “The diplomatic protocol on a presidential delegation is that the principal is often accompanied by their spouse.”
“Here’s what I want you to understand,” he continued. “Before me, it was the Secretary of the Army under President Trump who took that trip with his wife. Before that, it was Mrs. Trump as first lady who went to the Invictus Games. Before that, Mrs. Obama did the same thing. I guess the question on my mind is, if no one’s raising questions about why Secretary Esper and his wife led that delegation, as well they should have, then why is it any different when it’s me and my husband?”
