Pop singer Chappell Roan and actor-comedian Bowen Yang seemed eager to quash rumors of a feud following Roan’s “Saturday Night Live” appearance as a musical guest this weekend.

Roan and Yang held hands as host John Mulaney thanked the show’s guests ― including Vice President Kamala Harris ― and said goodnight to viewers. As the credits rolled, the two could be seen sharing a hug.

Given that the exchange took place so late in the show, it was easy to overlook it. Fans of both performers, however, were quick to interpret it as televised détente.

In September, Yang was hit with a flurry of criticism following an “SNL” segment in which he appeared as Moo Deng ― the pygmy hippopotamus who became an internet sensation this fall ― and parodied recent comments made by Roan with regard to protecting her mental health amid her rise to fame.

Calling himself “your favorite hippo’s favorite hippo,” Yang quipped: “Reminder, women owe you nothing. When I am in my enclosure, tripping over stuff, biting my trainer’s knee, I am at work. That is the project. Do not yell my name or expect a photo just because I am your parasocial bestie or because you appreciate my talent.”

The joke was a clear allusion to Roan, who has been described in the media as “your favorite artist’s favorite artist.” In August, the “Good Luck, Babe!” singer spoke out against the “predatory behavior” she’d received from some of her fans in a lengthy note on social media in which she proclaimed: “When I’m on stage, when I’m performing, when I’m in drag, when I’m at a work event, when I’m doing press...I am at work.”

A day after the “SNL” segment aired, Yang responded to the backlash in an Instagram Story.

“If my personal stance and the piece aren’t absolutely clear in terms of supporting her then there it is I guess,” he wrote. “everything she has ever asked for has been reasonable and even then we can connect it to another story about boundaries or whatever.”

Interestingly, the “SNL” debacle came just weeks after Yang expressed his admiration for Roan, whose smash 2023 album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,” is widely expected to nab numerous Grammy Award nominations later this week.

“So I fucking love you,” he told Roan while in conversation for the Aug. 19 issue of Interview magazine. “I know we don’t know each other that well, but I’m following you for the rest of time. You’re incredible. Enjoy it.”
