CNN’s chief data analyst Harry Enten highlighted just how historically unique the 15% drop in the S&P 500 stock market index is, a plunge sparked by uncertainty over Donald Trump’s incoming tariffs.
Enten wasn’t buying Republican spin that the dip is “pretty normal stuff.”
“If this is pretty normal stuff, I’d like to know what not normal stuff is,” he quipped. “If this is a boom, I’d like to know what a bust is.”
Trump is the only president ever “to see a drop of 15% this soon into his presidency in the S&P 500 after inheriting a bull market,” Enten noted.
The only other president to see a similar early-term drop was George W. Bush in 2001, he noted. But Bush inherited a collapsing dot-com bubble and not the strong market that welcomed Trump, Enten explained.
“This is truly unique,” Enten flagged. “When you come in with a bull market and then boom! Right through the floor. Donald Trump, the S&P 500 dropping already 15%.”
