Longtime Donald Trump antagonist Bill Maher said he admired the president on many fronts, just days after dining with him at the White House. (Watch the video below.)
In a “Club Random” podcast interview with Chris Cuomo shared Sunday, Maher praised the president’s shrewdness.
“Trump is one of the most effective politicians, whatever you think of the policy and him as a person,” Maher said. “Just as a politician. Just understanding that always lean in to being more who you are. The people are not savvy about issues, but they smell a phony a mile away. And that kind of shit, nobody else does it.”
While claiming he’s been Trump’s “biggest critic for good reason,” Maher expressed appreciation for him.
The host said he had to “give it up” for Trump’s showmanship and bravado.
Maher gave his own version of Trump’s claim that he threatened a Taliban leader by showing the militant a photo of his house.
“When he did that thing where the guy came in from the Taliban and he said, ‘This is an aerial picture of your house. If during our withdrawal one American is hurt, just know I know where you live,’” Maher said.
“I was like, oh can we just play the music now? Because I don’t care it’s Donald Trump and he’s the worst person ever, blah, blah, blah ― I fucking love that!” he added.
Although Trump changed his primary residence to Florida, Maher recalled an instance that brought out the “hometown boy” in Trump’s defense of New York City. It’s unclear what incident he was talking about but Trump did give an impassioned response to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) criticizing New York values.
“He has those moments that no other politician has. And the Democrats have to find that guy,” Maher said.
He also noted Trump’s appeal “on a primal level” that blue state candidates have not been able to match.
“His message is, ‘I’m me, I’m strong and I’m daddy,’” he said. “People want a daddy.”
Kid Rock, who dined with Trump and Maher, said the dinner was pleasant and mind-blowing.
But until Maher spills about his meal with Trump, as scheduled for April 11 on “Real Time,” here’s a heaping helping of his gushing over the president:
