Nearly a year after Bennifer split up again, Ben Affleck is opening up about his divorce from Jennifer Lopez.

In a new cover story for the April issue of GQ, the “Accountant 2” star got candid about why he chose to appear in the singer’s documentary “The Greatest Love Story Never Told” despite being “more reserved and private” than Lopez and looking less-than-thrilled on camera.

“Part of it was, ‘Okay, if I’m going to participate in this, I want to try to do it in an honest way and in a way that’s interesting,’” Affleck explained of his role in the film, which was released last year. “Because I thought it was an interesting examination.”

The Oscar winner went on to give Lopez her props as someone who has “handled celebrity more adeptly and more adroitly than I have,” before noting “my temperament is to be a little bit more reserved and private than hers.”

“As happens in relationships, you don’t always have the same attitude towards these things,” Affleck told GQ. “And so I thought, Oh, this is interesting because how do you reconcile that? Because ... I love and support this person. I believe in them. They’re great. I want people to see that.”

Affleck and Lopez — famously coined Bennifer by fans — were the it couple of the early ’00s.

The ex-couple got engaged in 2002 but parted ways the following year. They later reconciled and tied the knot in 2022, but their rekindled love soon faded as Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck last year.

Speaking further about the documentary, Affleck recalled to GQ something of note that he said while filming, in hopes of clarifying his comments.

“And I think the thing that I said in that documentary or the piece that they used was where I said, ‘You don’t marry a ship captain,’” he said. “And then say, ‘Well, I don’t like going out in the water.’ You’ve got to own what you knew going into any relationship.”

Affleck continued, “I think it’s important to say that wasn’t the cause of some major fracture,” before declaring, “It’s not like you can watch that documentary and go, ‘Oh, now I understand the issues that these two had.’”

Elsewhere in the interview, Affleck, who told GQ he has “nothing but respect” for his ex, revealed there is “no scandal” behind the demise of his high-profile romance with Lopez.

“There’s no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue. The truth is, when you talk to somebody, ‘Hey, what happened?’ Well, there is no, ‘This is what happened,’” he said. “It’s just a story about people trying to figure out their lives and relationships in ways that we all sort of normally do.”

Affleck continued, “There’s a tendency to look at breakups and want to identify root causes or something. But honestly ... the truth is much more quotidian than probably people would believe or would be interesting.”

While speaking with Interview magazine back in October, Lopez admitted she doesn’t regret her former relationship with Affleck for “one second.”

“That doesn’t mean it didn’t almost take me out for good. It almost did. But now, on the other side of it, I think to myself, ‘Fuck, that is exactly what I needed,’” she added.
