Lola Bonfiglio will hold on for one more day on “American Idol.” Maybe even more. (Watch the video below.)
She surprised the judges by singing with her mother, Carnie Wilson, and aunt, Wendy Wilson, of Wilson Phillips for her audition on Sunday’s show. Naturally, they performed the group’s 1992 hit “Hold On” as Bonfiglio’s dad Rob played guitar.
Lola then sang a solo rendition of Kacey Musgraves’ “Rainbow,” earning tears from her mother and measured praise from the judges. They advanced her to the next stage.
Lionel Richie said her voice “is there” but she needed to hold “the story” longer as a lead singer. Luke Bryan said that while Musgraves’ song called for a more subdued approach, Lola will have to “let loose a little bit” during the competition. Carrie Underwood cited Bonfiglio’s “honesty” in her voice and presence. “I wanna see you own your talent,” she said. “You have a lot to offer.”
Lola, a 19-year-old student, initially walked out with just her father, who announced himself.
“So I’m guessing you come from a musical family,” Underwood said in what was likely a bit set up beforehand. Then Carnie and Wendy Wilson came out to cries of recognition from the panel.
“I don’t know how to proceed right now,” Underwood said.
It all worked out.
