Two Pentagon officials were escorted out of the Department of Defense and placed on administrative leave on Tuesday amid a probe into unauthorized disclosures, according to multiple news reports.

Dan Caldwell, a top aide to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth who was named in the infamous Signal group chat, was implicated in a departmental investigation into leaks, according to Reuters, which was first to report his suspension.

Caldwell, a veteran of the Marine Corps and the Iraq War, was blamed for giving reporters classified information, an official told CBS News.

Last month, Hegseth wrote that Caldwell would serve as the point of contact for the Defense Department to coordinate the attack plans on the Houthis in the Signal text thread that Atlantic Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg was inadvertently added to.

Prior to joining the Pentagon, Caldwell worked as a public policy adviser at the Washington-based think tank Defense Priorities. Caldwell was also part of Concerned Veterans for America while Hegseth was in charge of the advocacy group.

Darin Selnick, the Pentagon’s deputy chief of staff, was also suspended as part of the leaks probe and escorted out of the department’s building, according to Politico, which was first to report he was put on leave.

Politico noted that the unauthorized disclosures that were being investigated by the Pentagon related to billionaire Elon Musk’s visit to the department and the suspension of intelligence collection on Ukraine, among other issues.

Caldwell and Selnick have yet to comment on the reports.

Their suspensions come after the Trump administration and the Defense Department vowed to crack down on unauthorized disclosures.

Joe Kasper, Hegseth’s chief of staff, last month ordered an “immediate and thorough investigation” into leaks of national security information, noting that senior officials could be subject to polygraph tests as part of the probe. It’s unclear whether Caldwell or Selnick took a polygraph test prior to being placed on leave.
