A Yemeni asylum seeker, being housed at an Essex accommodation centre, is under investigation for alleged links to the Houthi rebel group, GB News can exclusively reveal.

The young man is understood to be a resident at the former Wethersfield airbase near Braintree, which is now used as accommodation for hundreds of asylum seekers.

Sources uncovered multiple videos and pictures, allegedly showing the migrant posing with various weapons, including an AK47 assault rifle, back in his native Yemen.

Other images show posts on the man's social media account that appear to indicate support for the Houthi rebels.

The Houthis are designated by the US and a number of other nations as a terrorist organisation.

But despite having attacked international shipping, including British-flagged vessels in the Red Sea over the past year, they are not a proscribed terrorist group in the UK.

However, the Houthis are extremely violent, and as well as targeting international shipping, they regularly launch cruise missiles and drones towards Israel.

The asylum seeker's social media account shows him visiting multiple locations here in the UK and abroad.

Some images see him attending a football match in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, wearing a scarf with the colours of Al Nassr FC.

Among multiple pictures and videos taken back in Yemen, he is seen with an assault rifle and large amounts of ammunition.

He is also pictured posing with the Yemeni traditional dagger, the Jambiya.

One source told GB News "Sadly, it's not uncommon for adult males to run about with lethal weapons in a lawless country like Yemen.

"But it does raise the question of whether that's the calibre of person we want to see being accepted into this country."

The local MP for Braintree and former Home Secretary James Cleverly, has been made aware of the issues around this asylum seeker.

In a letter to one concerned constituent, he said: "I have spoken directly with both the Home Office and the police."

The former Home Secretary continued: "I've been assured the matter has been referred to Prevent and assessed by Essex police. Please be assured this is being taken seriously and appropriate action is underway."

Essex police have confirmed that they carried out an intial assessment of the case before it was referred to the counter-extremism body Prevent by another agency.

One GB News security source said that authorities had multiple live investigations underway on current asylum seekers, who could potentially pose a threat to the public.

"The authorities are live to the national security implications" the source said.

"There are genuine difficulties that immigration officers, law enforcement and the intelligence services face in trying to get a handle on who poses a risk.

They continued: "People smugglers tell migrants planning to cross the Channel to throw identifying documents away, to help manufacture a back story that's more likely to get them a positive outcome when it comes to their asylum claim.

"But that means it's often extremely difficult to get an accurate check the background of these individuals. And unless they're on a criminal or terrorist database, assessing the threat they pose is far from easy."

A Home Office spokesperson said: “We are aware of this individual and have taken appropriate action.

“We collect biometric data of all small boat arrivals and at the start of their asylum claim, which is then cross checked with immigration, security and criminality databases.”
