A woman has denied assaulting a security guard at a hotel housing asylum seekers after a man residing there allegedly entered her blind mother’s flat with his hand on his genital area.

A lawyer acting for Channay Augustus indicated that she would also deny possession of a meat cleaver after an altercation outside the Britannia Hotel in Canary Wharf, affray, assault on an emergency worker and common assault.

Channay Augustus, 22, appeared at Thames Magistrates’ Court in a grey tracksuit to confirm her name, date of birth and address.

The court heard that the trouble started on Wednesday evening when Ms Augustus was caring for her mother when an asylum seeker entered the flat.

The man, a resident at the Britannia Hotel, was said to have “had one hand on his genital area, another in the pocket of his hooded jumper.”

The court heard that after chasing a migrant out of her mother’s house, she went to the hotel at around 6pm where she confronted a security guard.

She returned a short time later with a meat cleaver and started banging it on a metal barrier outside the hotel, the court heard.

She was later arrested at her home.

Her solicitor said that Ms Augustus had been stabbed five years ago and she is now blind in her left eye.

Ms Augustus’s mother has stage four kidney failure and had been discharged from intensive care the day before the incident.

District Judge McIvor remanded Ms Augustus into custody.

Her next appearance was listed for September 12 at Snaresbrook Crown Court.
