The White House has accused the Nobel Committee of placing "politics over peace" after Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado was chosen for the honour instead of US President Donald Trump.

White House Director of Communication Steven Cheung said: "The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace."

The committee announced Ms Machado as the Nobel Peace Prize 2025 winner on Friday.

She was honoured for her "tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy", Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee Jorgen Watne Frydnes said in Oslo.
