NextImg:WFH Britons found to be clocking off work at 3pm

Remote workers are switching off from 3pm on Fridays, data has shown.

And, the majority of those working from home believe they have earned the right to stop working at 3pm.

Virgin Media's Broadband traffic figures showed an eight per cent dip between 3-5pm compared to the winter months.

Of the people surveyed by Virgin Media, 59 per cent said they did not feel guilty at all.

Around 61 per cent thought they had earned the right after a busy week.

Whereas, 63 per cent believed they were more productive earlier in the week if they were allowed to have an earlier Friday finish.

What people do after their shift appears to vary.

For some it might be a trip to the pub with 10 per cent saying they had taken their laptop to a beer garden on a warm summer Friday.

A whopping 30 per cent of people aged 18 to 24 indicated they had worked from the car while travelling away for a weekend trip.

A secretive bunch, 24 per cent, said they had left work early but kept their work status as "active".

The UK is the top country for people working from home.

Around 42 per cent of Britain's population work partially or permanently from home, the Office of National Statistics show.

It shows that people now work from home for 1.8 days per week on average.

However, the global average sits at 1.3 days, a recent King's College London study showed.

The Virgin polling showed that 30 per cent of companies actually allowed for an early Friday exit in the summer months.

Associate Professor at KCL Dr Cevat Giray Aksoy told the Times: “If some people are logging off at 3pm on a Friday, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

"In fact, it may reflect greater efficiency, better time management, or simply a more balanced work culture," he said.

“What ultimately matters is whether the work gets done, not whether someone is active on their broadband connection at a particular hour.”

JP Morgan Chase Chief Executive Jamie Dimon told staff earlier this year to not "give me this s**t that work-from-home-Friday works".

The bank ordered staff back to the office on a full-time basis.

That was also adopted by other Wall Street companies including Goldman Sachs and BlackRock as well as Amazon.

However, HSBC told executives they would have to return back to the office four days a week and Barclays has enforced a minimum three days.

Research suggests that some people are so conditioned to working from home that they are willing to change jobs.

Around 42 per cent of people said they were willing to comply with a five-day return to the office which was down from 54 per cent in early 2022, a separate KCL study showed.

Those willing to switch employers had risen from 40 to 50 per cent since 2022.
