NextImg:'We're already suffering!' Rachel Reeves scolded over Spending Review snub to farmers - 'Didn't mention us once'

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has been scolded for snubbing farmers and agriculture in Wednesday's spending review, as farmer Andrew Ward stressed that the industry is "already suffering".

Laying out her economic plan in the Commons on Wednesday, Reeves announced a U-turn on the Winter Fuel Payments alongside an extra £29billion for the NHS.

Speaking to GB News, Lincolnshire farmer Andrew Ward hit out at the lack of acknowledgement for the farming industry, despite nationwide backlash to Labour's inheritance tax raid.

Reacting to the review, Ward told GB News reporter Jack Carson: "This is exactly the problem that we've got, that the governments say they are supportive of agriculture, they want to have dialogue with us, but they're not doing that.

"I think one of the biggest telling things is in her actual statement yesterday, she didn't mention food or farming, and she didn't mention agriculture, not once."

Highlighting Reeves's lack of support for the farmers, Ward stated: "Therefore, surely if she's going to support us, that needs mentioning."

Warning of more "cuts" to farming and agriculture ahead of the autumn Budget, Ward told GB News that the industry is "already suffering", and needs support from Government.

He explained: "When you start to look at the massive cut that there is, there is going to be a cut, and agriculture, we're already suffering.

"And when we've had the spending review, we don't want to have cuts because at the end of the day, the industry is on its knees and we need supporting."

Stressing the need for food to be produced in the UK as opposed to importing from other countries, Ward cautioned: "We need to have our food grown in this country, not import more food from abroad.

"And when you start to look at nature recovery, they're saying they're going to give more money into nature recovery, we've got to grow food in this country. But overall there is a budget cut, and we must not forget that."

When asked by Jack what the mood is among the farming community amid the inheritance tax raid, Ward revealed that many farmers are "selling up" as it is no longer "worth getting out of bed for".

Ward expanded: "I've spoken to quite a few farmers today who say they can't carry on. They're splitting the farm up, they're going to be doing something else, they're selling the farm because it's just not worth getting out of bed to produce food at a loss, because that's what we're doing at the moment.

"They are saying the Government not taking food security seriously at all, and when you look at the way that we've already had a budget cut, they're saying that they gave the biggest budget ever to agriculture when it was announced in October of five billion over two years.

"Then they go and cut the dealing payments by 76 per cent, so they're actually giving less to agriculture than have done for years."
