The first small boat migrants have been detained under the Government’s new pilot scheme to return people to France, Yvette Cooper has confirmed.

Speaking today, she said the process of transferring arrivals to immigration removal centres is already underway.

She refused to say how many have been detained, warning that operational details could be exploited by criminal gangs.

But she insisted the scheme would ramp up and said returns could begin “within weeks”.
